One of the main focal points of any communications company that deals with people’s lives on a daily basis is whether or not their system is secure and that all of their customers are being looked after and are safe. Securus Technologies, the leading producer of security and communications technologies for the United States prison system, is no different. They have been providing prisons, jails and corrections facilities with the technology needed to monitor and confine inmates for years. Not only that, but they are also responsible for supporting these inmates as well, developing and implementing communications technology such as video chat interfaces and connection solutions in order to make their lives behind bars more comfortable. Unfortunately, there are always those that will try to benefit and cheat the system, going beyond what it was originally created for, and break the law as a result. Securus Technologies is attempting to solve an issue within their own secure network, and in the process make it more difficult for criminals to continue to break the law while being locked away.
One of the main issues that Securus faces is the unauthorized use of cell phones in prisons. Inmates are allowed to rent out tablets on occasion, and use them to access the internet and communicate with their families. They are limited in how often they can use these mobile devices, and their use is heavily monitored. For inmates who want to go beyond this scope, they normally have individuals sneak in cell phones so that they can make unauthorized calls. These calls are used to smuggle in contraband which can increase issues with drug use in the prison. In order to combat this communication problem, Securus Technologies plans on forming a wireless containment system to monitor, locate and disable outgoing and incoming cell signals. This is done by locating an IP address from the accessed device, and an operator using the containment system to deny the signal from reaching its destination.
While the idea for the containment system makes perfect sense it is still in the testing phase. The time before implementation is based on training of personnel and operators to use it, installing the system into a prison, and then testing it for any bugs. Once these obstacles have been avoided then Securus can use it to increase security and safety for everyone caught within the systems range. This is just another example of how Securus Technologies can care for humanity, and one of the reasons why they have been able to climb to the top of their business class in a short period of time.
