The Spectacular Sweetgreen

Every time there’s a cultural shift, the food industry reinvents its menus to appeal to more trendy consumers. Currently, America’s obsession with food has turned healthy. Modern consumers only trust food chains that offer healthy and organic food options. Along with those preferences, they also want locally grown and raised foods, to encourage local economic growth.

Not every restaurant chain has adapted to these new preferences so easily. Fortunately, this shift in consumer behavior has given new restaurants a chance to outperform the traditional big-name restaurant chains. One such food chain is Sweetgreen, a high-end salad chain.

It may seem like a salad chain wouldn’t survive in America, but America is more health conscious than ever. Modern diners are also more informed on where their food is coming from; it impacts their decision of where to dine. Most restaurants try to offer healthy choices, but none approach Sweetgreen’s dedication to staying healthy.

Sweetgreen’s platform embraces everything that’s important to diners these days. All of their recipes include the freshest, organically grown local produce they can find. The co-founders actually talk to local farmers about their products before adding anything to their menus. This adds a unique flare to Sweetgreen that large corporate restaurants can’t get. Technology is also an integral part of Sweetgreen’s success. It may not seem like, but companies haven’t been embracing technology for that long. It wasn’t until the boom of smartphones that companies show potential in using technology as an additional revenue source.

For Sweetgreen, technology was a big part of the foundation; it’s a part of their DNA. The co-CEOs are considered tech pioneers for their innovative use of technology. Sweetgreen was one of the first restaurant chains to use a website and mobile app to allow customers to order food before getting to the store.

As young entrepreneurs, the trio of CEOs learned everything the hard way. The most important lesson they learned: build a team before things get too hectic. Sadly, it’s a mistake that too many entrepreneurs make, which doesn’t always come with a second chance. Sweetgreen’s co-CEOs got lucky and asked for help when they really needed it.

Without a good team behind them, they probably wouldn’t have made this far. It’s always better to build a team sooner rather than later.
